February. The Canary Islands have perfect weather and when you get home spring is just around the corner. Lanzarote has lovely roads for road cycling but even more so for GRAVEL. Beautiful views, great climbs, lava fields and incredible amounts of beautiful beaches. We have traveled here three times and always come back. Unbelievably beautiful, nice easy roads and fairly steep slopes.
Video from our last trip
Base in Puerto Carmen
Puerto Carmen has a nice beach, many restaurants and is an excellent base for tours all over the island. See the "tick" on the map, south side.
The week has tours with a distinctly different character.
Tours
All the tours are described here, each also has a FATMAP link. If you click on it, you can see a true 3D view of the island, with the route and view it from all angles. You can also virtually follow the route by clicking on the aircraft, once you have opened FATMAP.
Day 1 Nazaret
A trip on small roads from Puerto Carmen to Nazaret and back. A bit of a warm-up ride with 65km and 904hm. We cycle along fields and mountains and finish along the water past the airport. We visit the Pirate Museum at the top of Montana de Guanapay. We have lunch in Tahiche after 38km.
Day 2 Papagayo and Femés
We go west along the coast to classic Papagayo, an absolutely wonderful beach. Maybe a swim before we have lunch at their lovely restaurant? Home we cycle over Femés, Last km there averages 12% so you will feel it in your legs.
Day 3 Famara & Teguise
A tough day 108km/ 1,600hm but with incredible rewards. Famara is a world famous beach, a mecca for surfers, kiters and windsurfers. A nice relaxed surfing culture in the small town. We continue up to Ermita de las Nieves and the absolutely fantastic view there.
Day 4 La Graciosa (Small rest day)
The small island, La Graciosa off el Mirador is a mecca for Gravel. This day is a little shorter but no less rich in experience. No asphalt, lots of beaches and fantastic Gravel. We take a car to Orzola and then ferry over to the island.
Day 5 Lava Day!
Lanzarote has a huge lava field on its northwest side. A magical nature reserve that is completely impenetrable except along the dirt roads that exist.
We will also go to Playa de Malvas for lunch. The afternoon offers more lava before we land back home in Puerto Carmen.
Day 6 Mirador del Rio
We take transport to Punta Mujeres and climb up to Mirador del Rio. A coffee, a bun and a fantastic view. Down in Haria there is an opportunity to fill up a bit before the climb. We eat lunch in the sleepy coastal village of La Santa. A tough day but not without its rewards.
The week
A trip that is made because it is fun and nice to come to a new place for gravel adventure. You book your own flight and hotel.
Tips
Gear: I will ride 700c/42 alternatively 650b/52. Tubeless is recommended of course, as well as a good kit with reserves on the bike, Click here for a list.
Clothing is the norm for Swedish summer, with a vest/sleeves or windbreaker as a spare and when driving downhill if it gets cold. We will have coffee and lunch but a little extra energy is never wrong..
Routes: All routes will be shared some time before departure and will also be downloadable on site.
