Mallorca Gravel October 2021

INZAIN Gravel offers gravel skiing in Mallorca

Autumn is lurking around the corner but in Mallorca it is the best time. 22 degrees, mild evenings warm in the water and the gravel in the best condition.

Mallorca is known to many as a cycling paradise, with nice roads, good weather and friendly people. We ourselves have been there many times and cycled by road, but what not as many people know is that the island is also fantastic for gravel cycling.

We have been there and drawn up nice tours and got a feel for the gravel, established contact with guides, bike rental companies and not least found fantastic accommodation for several years. We were looking for a place that is centrally located so that both the plateau and the mountains can be reached without monotonous transport cycling. A home that is personal and that offers natural opportunities for socializing, just as much or as little as everyone wants. Hotels can easily become rather impersonal and not always so pleasant. Now, for almost four years, we have found the right one.

Alaró & Can Fressa

We live centrally in Alaró, a prosperous typical Mallorcan village. No tourist shops as far as the eye can see. We have the village square and meeting point within 50 meters with many restaurants, bars and cafes. If you want fresh bread in the morning, you pop down to the bakery, which is also located by the square, and there are several grocery stores within walking distance.

Alaró is ideally located for cycling, at the foot of Orientbacken. It is close to all mountains and plains. In addition, the Gravel routes basically start outside the gate.

Can Fressa is a private Mansion that is divided into a number of apartments spread over three floors. There is a fantastic garden with a pool and many patios and balconies. There are several grills and the house has its own wine cellar(!), where we will have wine tasting with Tapas.

A Yoga room with both mats and blocks is available and the large kitchen is fully equipped. There is a washing machine, wifi and many living areas as well as very comfortable beds. Our hostess Helga pampers us and helps with big and small things. Bed linen is changed once a week and the common areas are cleaned daily. We look after the kitchen ourselves.

Guids: Risto Aalto and Gerry Askefalk have done many trips on Gravel, in Sweden, on Mallorca, Gran Canaria and Kansas. We have established cooperation with local guides and created routes that are pleasant and moderately difficult. We are on all the tours and in addition we will probably get a "local legend" on one of the tours. The basis of our philosophy is that it should be safe and that everyone should have fun. We never leave anyone alone and makes sure that everyone comes along, regardless of form or difficulty. If someone needs to shorten or cancel the tour, we will solve it.

Schedule

Sunday: Arrival, Inzain arranges transfer to Alar´o. Assemble your bike or pick up your rental bike. When everyone is checked in and ready, a slightly shorter check-out ride awaits. We get to experience asphalt and gravel and a small hill called col de Toffla. After the tour, there will be a welcome drink, information and dinner in the house.

Monday: Gravel! About 85km and 850hm starting directly from Alaró. Lunch and coffee stop. The tour starts directly outside the door after breakfast. It leads us around the plains with the occasional small hill to conquer. Most of it is simple, but there are a couple of more technical parts. When we drove this I had one of my best days on the island.

Tuesday: Gravel, Our guide has created a real adventure for us, expect about 10 miles.

Wednesday: Mountain! As we know, Mallorca has more to offer than gravel. Like for example. the best mountain in the world. We can offer three different lengths and degrees of difficulty, all on asphalt, choose the one that suits you. In the evening we have wine tasting with Tapas at "Sa Portassa", the house's own wine cellar.

Alternative 1 col de Batalla, lunch Puerto Pollenca and then home on fantastic small roads. 10 miles 1,200hm
Alternative 2 Small Mountiantour col de Soller, Deia, Valdemossa 1,600 hm 10 miles.
Alternative 3 Big Mountain tour, Transport to Andtrax, MA10 as far as possible, with destination Pollenca.

Thursday: Rest day. Free activities, a trip to Palma is recommended either by bike, train or a combination. The beach promenade is 2 miles long and an experience in itself, maybe an ice cream and a visit to the Rapha store? Maybe rent a car, there are many options.

Anima Beach – Palma

Friday: Gravel with transfers Martin has put together an epic adventure, we will have transfers to the start.

Saturday: Parc Llenfant. An absolutely fantastic trip, to the sea. Tough climb back and then kinder home via the disused railway, vias Verdes. Three miles on gravel with stations and everything else left in original condition. In the evening we have the big farewell dinner and some surprises. We pack our bikes and get ready for the journey home.

Sunday: Transfer to the airport for the return journey, we will be picked up directly at the house.

Gear: Ideally, you take your gravel lift and two pairs of wheels, but it is perfectly possible to drive with one as well. Last, Gerry had the 52mm WTB Sendero and it was overkill on almost everything. Gerry will choose 40mm with a light pattern next time. Risto drove with lightly patterned Zipp Tangente Course G40 Folding all week, which worked excellently on both asphalt and gravel. Tubeless is recommended, of course, as well as a good kit with reserves on the bike, Click here for a list.

Foot pump and tools are in the house or can be borrowed from us. Clothing is the norm for Swedish summer, with a vest/sleeves or windbreaker as a spare and when driving downhill if it gets cold. We will have coffee and lunch but a little extra energy is never wrong (it can also be bought at the local bike shop). If you're worried, a portable mini lock can come with you on the tours, but I've never heard of anyone losing their bike during coffee here. There is a washing machine, as well as good drying facilities.

Routes: All routes will be shared some time before departure and will also be downloadable on site.
